Deoghar sits in the western part of the Santhal Pargana division, in the north-east of Jharkhand. The district covers roughly 2,477 square kilometres and shares borders with Banka and Jamui districts to the north, Dumka to the east, Jamtara to the south and Giridih to the west.

The landscape is largely undulating plateau country, broken by scattered low hill ranges — Phuljori, Teror and Degaria among them. This is the eastern edge of the Chota Nagpur plateau, and the terrain is gentler than Jharkhand's more forested interior.
