The temple gives Deoghar its other, more commonly used name: Baba Dham. The main shrine is lotus-shaped and stands around 72 feet tall, and the complex holds twenty-one further temples alongside it. The presiding deity is known as Vaidyanath, "lord of physicians", and the shrine has long been associated with healing.

Deoghar is unusual among Jyotirlinga temples in one respect that matters a great deal to pilgrims: devotees are permitted to pour the holy water onto the Jyotirlinga themselves, rather than through a priest.

The town's rhythm is set by the temple. For most of the year it is a manageable, walkable place of ashrams, hills and sweet shops. Through the month of Shravan it becomes host to the Shravani Mela, one of the largest gatherings of its kind anywhere in India, when the population swells many times over and every road into town fills with saffron-clad kanwariyas.

Beyond the temple, Deoghar makes a comfortable base for the hills and caves immediately around it — Trikut Pahar, Tapovan and Nandan Pahar are all short trips — and for Basukinath, the shrine most pilgrims pair with Baidyanath to complete their journey.

Deoghar is first and foremost a pilgrimage destination, and for most visitors the reason to come is Baba Baidyanath Dham itself. As one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, it draws devotees from across India year-round, and the ability to make the water offering with your own hands is something pilgrims travel a long way for.

It is also one of the more approachable temple towns in eastern India. Jasidih Junction, the main railhead, sits only about 6–7 km from the temple and is served by long-distance trains from Kolkata, Delhi and Patna. Since 2022 Deoghar has had its own airport, roughly 12 km from the temple, with direct flights from Kolkata. Very few pilgrimage towns of this significance are this easy to reach.

For travellers who want more than the temple, the surrounding landscape is the draw. Trikut Pahar has three peaks and a ropeway. Tapovan has caves and a hillside Shiva temple. Nandan Pahar sits within walking distance of the town. None of these require serious planning — they are half-day trips at most.

Deoghar also has a genuine local food culture worth arriving hungry for. Its peda is well known across the region, and the litti chokha here is the real thing rather than a tourist version.

If you are considering timing: the Shravani Mela in Shravan is extraordinary to witness but extremely crowded, and accommodation needs booking well in advance. October to March is the comfortable window for a quieter visit.
