Naulakha Mandir is traditionally associated with Rani Charushila of the Pathuria Ghat royal family of Kolkata. After meeting the saint Balananda Brahmachari, she supported the construction of the temple.

The name 'Naulakha' is linked with the approximately nine lakh rupees said to have been spent on its construction. The temple's scale and design distinguish it from the older pilgrimage shrines of Deoghar.
