Baba Baidyanath Temple, also known as Baba Dham or Baidyanath Dham, is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas - the most sacred shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is the single reason most visitors come to Deoghar, and the town has grown around it over centuries.
The temple complex houses the main Jyotirlinga shrine along with several smaller temples within the same courtyard, connected by the traditional practice of tying sacred threads between them. Devotees typically offer water, bel leaves and flowers during darshan.
The busiest period by far is Shravani Mela during the Hindu month of Shravan (usually July to August), when lakhs of Kanwariyas walk from Sultanganj carrying Ganga water to offer here. Queues during this period can last many hours, and the whole town operates around the pilgrimage.
The temple sits in central Deoghar and is walkable from most guest houses in the town centre. Jasidih Junction, the nearest major railway station, is roughly 7 km away with autos and taxis readily available. Deoghar also has its own airport at Devipur.
