Deoghar FAQ

Deoghar is in the Santhal Pargana division of Jharkhand, in north-east India. It is the headquarters of Deoghar district, which covers around 2,477 square kilometres.

Deoghar is home to Baba Baidyanath Dham, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas — the most sacred shrines of Lord Shiva in India. The town's name means "abode of the gods".

It is a Jyotirlinga temple dedicated to Shiva. The main shrine is lotus-shaped, stands around 72 feet tall, and the complex holds twenty-one further temples alongside it.

Vaidyanath means "lord of physicians". In the temple's founding legend, Shiva healed Ravana after his penance, and the shrine has been associated with healing ever since.

Yes. Deoghar is unusual among Jyotirlinga temples in permitting devotees to pour the holy water onto the lingam themselves, rather than through a priest.

The temple generally opens around 4:00 AM for Mangal Aarti and closes around 9:00 PM, with a break in the afternoon. Timings change during Shravani Mela and Mahashivratri, so verify before travelling.

No. General darshan is free. Expedited (sheeghra) darshan coupons are available separately for those who prefer not to queue.

It is the month-long pilgrimage held during Shravan (July–August), when millions of devotees carry Ganga water from Sultanganj to offer at Baidyanath. In 2026 it runs from 30 July to 28 August.

The route is about 105 km, walked by pilgrims carrying Ganga water on a kanwar. Many walk it barefoot over several days.

October to March. The weather is mild and dry, and crowds are far more manageable than during Shravan.

Only if the Mela itself is your purpose. It is an extraordinary experience but involves very large crowds, long waits, heavy monsoon rain, and accommodation booked out months in advance.

Jasidih Junction is the main railhead, about 6–7 km from the temple, with long-distance connections from Kolkata, Delhi and Patna. Baidyanathdham station is closer to the temple and serves shorter-distance trains.

Yes. Deoghar Airport (DGH) opened in 2022 and is about 12 km from the temple. IndiGo operates direct flights from Kolkata, with a Delhi connection also available.

Autos and taxis run the 6–7 km route throughout the day. Shared autos are continuous and are the cheapest option.

Modest clothing covering shoulders and knees, for both men and women. Footwear is removed before entering, so shoes that come off easily are practical.

Peda, a soft khoya-based sweet, is the town's signature and a traditional temple offering. Litti chokha and thekua are the other local specialities worth trying.

Tower Chowk is the main market, good for religious souvenirs, textiles and hand-crafted items, and it is also the centre of the peda trade.

Trikut Pahar for its three peaks and ropeway, Naulakha Mandir, Tapovan for its caves and hillside Shiva temple, Nandan Pahar at the town's edge, and Basukinath.

A hill with three peaks named for Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwara, offering trekking and a ropeway. It also holds the Trikutachal Mahadeva temple and the hermitage of Sage Dayananda.

A 146-foot temple dedicated to Radha and Krishna, architecturally similar to Belur Math in West Bengal. Its name comes from its construction cost of nine lakh rupees.

Most pilgrims do. Basukinath is a short road trip from Deoghar and is traditionally paired with Baidyanath to complete the pilgrimage.

One day covers the temple and the town. Two days lets you add Trikut Pahar and Tapovan. Three days allows Basukinath as well.

Humid subtropical with dry winters. Temperatures range from around 24°C in January to about 38°C in May, with heavy monsoon rain from June to September totalling around 1,276 mm a year.

The temple visit involves queuing and walking on stone floors, which can be demanding. Early morning visits, expedited darshan coupons and avoiding Shravan all make it considerably easier.

Yes. AIIMS Deoghar is a tertiary care hospital with a 24/7 emergency wing, and Sadar Hospital is the district hospital, empanelled under Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY.

Very. As a pilgrimage town, vegetarian food is the default and is easy to find everywhere, particularly around the temple.

Yes. Larger establishments accept cards, but local markets, sweet shops and smaller stalls are cash-first.
