Tapovan Hills

Caves and hilltop shrines associated with meditation and ascetic practice.

Tapovan, meaning "forest of penance", is a hilly area outside Deoghar dotted with caves where sages are said to have meditated. There is a Shiva temple known as Taponath Mahadeva at the site, and a set of caves that pilgrims and trekkers explore.

The walk up involves a moderate climb over rocky ground, so wear proper footwear. It appeals to visitors who want something quieter and more physical than the main temple circuit.

How to reach Tapovan Hills

Best reached by taxi or auto from Deoghar town. There is no regular public transport to the site.
