Fort Aguada

Built in 1612 to defend against Dutch and Maratha naval attacks and to guard the entrance to the Mandovi River, Fort Aguada is one of the best-preserved Portuguese forts in Goa. The fort also secured a freshwater spring used to resupply passing ships, which gives it its name (aguada, "watering place"). Its ramparts and bastions offer wide views over the Arabian Sea and the Sinquerim coastline. Inside the fort complex stands the lighthouse — among the oldest in Asia, first lit in 1864 — which is a separate ticketed section open only to adults.
