Dr Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary

Named after the Indian ornithologist Dr. Salim Ali, this mangrove sanctuary occupies part of Chorão Island in the Mandovi estuary, a short ferry crossing from Ribandar near Panaji. Its tidal mangrove and mudflat habitat supports a wide range of resident and migratory birdlife, and the sanctuary is best explored either on the elevated boardwalk trail or, for a fuller view, by hired canoe through the mangrove creeks. It offers a quieter, more rural side of Goa a few minutes from the capital.
