Chapora Fort

Chapora Fort sits on a headland above Vagator beach, built by the Portuguese in 1717 on the site of an earlier Muslim-era fort, to guard the mouth of the Chapora River from Maratha raids. Little remains beyond the outer laterite walls and bastions today, but the climb rewards visitors with one of the best panoramic viewpoints in North Goa, taking in Vagator's beaches, the river mouth and the coastline toward Morjim. The fort is widely known in India as a filming location for the Bollywood film Dil Chahta Hai, which has made it a minor pilgrimage site for fans as well as a sunset spot.
