Kanak Bhawan

Kanak Bhawan, the “Golden Palace”, is one of the most loved temples in Ayodhya. According to tradition, Queen Kaikeyi gave this palace to Sita as a gift soon after her marriage to Lord Ram, so it is revered as their private home.

The present building was rebuilt in 1891 by Queen Vrishbhanu Kunwari of Orchha (Tikamgarh). It looks like a Bundelkhand palace from outside, with a large courtyard and a richly decorated sanctum in which the idols of Ram and Sita wear gold crowns.

The temple is known for its devotional singing and its evening aarti. It celebrates Ram Navami and Janaki Navami, Sita's birthday a month later, with special decorations.

Kanak Bhawan is a few minutes' walk from Hanuman Garhi and about 600 m from the Ram Mandir, and roughly 1 km from Ayodhya Dham Junction by e-rickshaw.
