About Kaliadeh Palace

Kaliadeh Palace stands on an island in the Shipra river on the northern edge of Ujjain. An inscription dates it to 1458, during the reign of Sultan Mahmud Khilji of Malwa, and a later sultan added tanks and water channels that make the palace seem to float on the river.

Persian inscriptions in its corridors record visits by the Mughal emperors Akbar and Jahangir. Damaged in the Pindari wars, it was restored by Maharaja Madho Rao Scindia in the 1920s and is privately owned by the Scindia family, so access can be limited.
