Near Nashik, Trimbakeshwar marks the source of the Godavari river and is unusual for its lingam representing all three of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva together.
Trimbakeshwar sits at the base of Brahmagiri hill, about 30 kilometres from Nashik in Maharashtra, at what is traditionally regarded as the origin point of the Godavari - one of India's longest rivers, sometimes called the Dakshin Ganga (Ganges of the South). The name Trimbakeshwar itself reflects the site's most distinctive feature.
Unlike most Jyotirlingas, which represent Shiva alone, the lingam here is said to embody Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva together, represented by three small linga forms within the sanctum. The current temple, built in black stone in the eighteenth century under Peshwa patronage, is known for detailed carving. Nashik, and Trimbakeshwar with it, is also one of the four sites of the Kumbh Mela.
Nashik has both rail and air connections and is the natural base for visiting, with Trimbakeshwar a straightforward drive of under an hour away.
