An island shaped like the Om symbol, in the middle of the Narmada river - among the more visually distinctive of the twelve Jyotirlinga sites.
Omkareshwar takes its name from the shape of the island on which it stands - Mandhata, or Shivpuri island, in the Narmada river near Khandwa in Madhya Pradesh, said to resemble the Hindu symbol Om when viewed from certain angles. The temple sits at the point where the Narmada splits around the island before rejoining downstream.
Omkareshwar is one of two Jyotirlingas associated with the Narmada (the other, Amareshwar, sits directly across the river on the mainland, and the two are sometimes visited together). A bridge connects the island to the town, and pilgrims commonly take a short boat ride on the river as part of the visit. The temple architecture reflects a long building history, with older stonework alongside more recent additions.
Omkareshwar is about an hour and a half from Indore by road, which has the nearest major airport and railway station. The town itself has a small station with limited connections, so most travellers arrive via Indore.
October to March, avoiding the peak summer heat of the Narmada valley and the monsoon months when the river runs high.
