Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga

6 August 2026

Ujjain's Mahakaleshwar is one of the few Dakshinamukhi (south-facing) Jyotirlingas, and is known across India for its early-morning Bhasma Aarti.

Mahakaleshwar stands on the banks of the Kshipra river in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh - one of the seven ancient holy cities of India and a former capital that also gives its name to Ujjain's role as a seat of classical astronomy. The lingam here is considered swayambhu (self-manifested), and the temple is one of only a small number of Jyotirlingas oriented to face south, a direction associated in Shaiva tradition with Shiva in his form as Kaal, or time itself.

Architecture and significance

The temple is built across five levels, with one below ground. It is best known for the Bhasma Aarti, a pre-dawn ritual in which sacred ash is offered to the lingam - a practice unique to this temple among the twelve. Ujjain itself is also one of the four cities that host the Kumbh Mela (locally called Simhastha), held roughly every twelve years.

How to reach

Ujjain has its own railway station with good connections across Madhya Pradesh, and Indore's airport is under an hour away by road - making this one of the more accessible Jyotirlingas.

Best time to visit

October to March is the most comfortable season. Whatever time of year you visit, arriving well before dawn is necessary if witnessing the Bhasma Aarti is a priority, since access and registration for it are managed separately from general darshan.
