The smallest and last-listed of the twelve Jyotirlingas, a short walk from the Ellora Caves near Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (Aurangabad) in Maharashtra.
Grishneshwar, also spelled Ghrishneshwar, stands at Verul village near the Ellora Caves in Maharashtra, close to Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (formerly Aurangabad). It is generally considered the last of the twelve Jyotirlingas in traditional listings, and among the more compact of the shrines - but its proximity to Ellora, a UNESCO World Heritage Site of rock-cut cave temples, means the two are almost always visited on the same trip.
The temple was rebuilt in the eighteenth century, again under the patronage of Ahilyabai Holkar - the same Maratha queen responsible for reconstructing Kashi Vishwanath in Varanasi, making her one of the most significant single patrons across the Jyotirlinga sites. The temple is built in red volcanic rock with detailed carved pillars in the mandapa.
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (Aurangabad) has its own airport and railway station and is the natural base, with Grishneshwar and the Ellora Caves both under 30 kilometres away by road - close enough to visit together in a single day.
