Shimla Travel Guide

Shimla, the capital of Himachal Pradesh and once the summer capital of British India, is among North India's most popular and accessible hill stations. Its colonial architecture, the pedestrian Mall Road and Ridge, and the UNESCO Kalka–Shimla toy train make it a rewarding trip in any season.

April to June for pleasant summers and December to February for snow. Avoid peak monsoon (July–September), when hill roads are prone to landslides.

By air: the nearest major airport is Chandigarh (~110 km); Shimla's own Jubbarhatti airport has very limited flights. By train: the broad-gauge railhead is Kalka, from where the scenic narrow-gauge Kalka–Shimla toy train climbs to Shimla. By road: well connected to Delhi (~343 km) and Chandigarh (~113 km) by bus and taxi.

Much of central Shimla around the Mall and Ridge is pedestrian-only, so expect to walk. Local taxis and the Mall lift (Cart Road to Mall level) help with the steep gradients; hired cabs are best for out-of-town spots like Kufri.

Himachali dishes such as siddu (steamed stuffed bread), chana madra and local trout feature alongside cafe fare on Mall Road. The Mall and Lakkar Bazaar have plenty of eateries and street snacks.

Day 1: The Ridge, Christ Church, Mall Road and a walk up to Jakhoo Temple. Day 2: Viceregal Lodge and gardens, plus Summer Hill / the quieter western side. Day 3: Day trip to Kufri for views and (seasonally) snow, returning via Mall Road for shopping.

Warm layers year-round (evenings are cool even in summer); heavy winterwear and non-slip footwear for December–February snow; a rain jacket in monsoon; comfortable walking shoes throughout.

Book accommodation near the Mall/Ridge to minimise steep walks with luggage. Weekends and summer holidays are crowded — a weekday visit is calmer. Check road and weather conditions before winter travel.
