Shillong Travel Guide

Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya, is a hill city in the Khasi Hills long called the "Scotland of the East". Known for waterfalls, lakes, a vibrant music scene and Khasi culture, it is the gateway to Cherrapunji, Mawlynnong and Meghalaya's living root bridges.

Roughly September to May for the most pleasant weather; the June–September monsoon is very heavy (the wettest places on earth are nearby). No snowfall — winters are cool but mild.

By air: most visitors fly to Guwahati (~120 km) and drive 3–4 hours up; Shillong's Umroi Airport (~30 km) has limited flights. By train: Guwahati (~100 km) is the nearest railhead. By road: frequent taxis and buses from Guwahati via a scenic highway.

Local and shared taxis are the main way around the city and to nearby sights; central areas are walkable but often busy with traffic.

Khasi and Northeastern cuisine feature strongly — jadoh (rice and meat), local pork dishes — alongside a lively cafe culture; Police Bazaar has many options.

Day 1: Ward's Lake, Don Bosco Museum, Police Bazaar and the city's cafe/music scene. Day 2: Elephant Falls, Shillong Peak (access permitting) and Umiam Lake. Day 3 (optional): Day trip to Cherrapunji, Mawlynnong (cleanest village) and the living root bridges.

Layers for mild days and cool evenings; a good rain jacket/umbrella (rain is common); comfortable walking shoes; no heavy winterwear needed (no snow).

No Inner Line Permit is required for Shillong. Traffic into and within the city can be heavy — allow time. It pairs naturally with Cherrapunji and Mawlynnong nearby.
