Shillong is Meghalaya's capital in the Khasi Hills, combining lakes, waterfalls, museums, a strong music culture and a practical base for routes toward Sohra, Mawlynnong and other Khasi landscapes.

The principal experiences include Ward's Lake, Don Bosco Museum, Elephant Falls, Shillong Peak access area, Umiam Lake, Cathedral of Mary Help of Christians.

Two to three well-planned days suit a first visit; add time for distant excursions or a slower neighbourhood-focused trip.

Khasi society and its traditional institutions long predate the city's development as a British administrative centre. Shillong became Meghalaya's capital when the state was formed in 1972.

Shillong is mild compared with the plains but receives substantial rain, especially during the monsoon. Winters are cool and generally dry; it does not normally receive snowfall.

Cooler or drier months

Usually best for long outdoor sightseeing days; carry a light layer where evenings turn cool.

Hot months

Start early, rest during the strongest afternoon heat and carry water and sun protection.

Shared local taxis and buses are common, with hired cars useful for outer attractions. Central traffic is heavy, so walk short safe sections where practical.

Group nearby attractions together and avoid unnecessary cross-city journeys during peak hours.

Shad Suk Mynsiem, Nongkrem Dance, Christmas, Wangala in the wider state and Shillong's music events influence demand; community ceremonies are not staged photo opportunities.

Dates change annually. Expect crowd controls and traffic diversions, and observe worship and processions respectfully.

Ward's Lake and Cathedral areas suit city photography, while Umiam and waterfalls require safe designated viewpoints. Heavy rain makes cliff edges and wet rocks dangerous.

Tripods, drones and commercial photography may need permission. Follow monument, museum, religious-site, aviation and security restrictions.

NEIGRIHMS and Civil Hospital Shillong are major public institutions, with private hospitals also serving the city. Rural excursions can be far from advanced care.
