Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim, is one of India's cleanest and most welcoming hill towns, set in the eastern Himalayas. It offers Kanchenjunga views, Buddhist monasteries, the lively MG Marg promenade, and access to Tsomgo Lake and the Nathula area.

March to May and October to mid-December for pleasant weather and clear mountain views. Avoid the monsoon, which brings heavy rain and landslide risk on hill roads.

By air: Pakyong Airport (~30 km) serves Gangtok with limited flights; Bagdogra (~120 km) is the larger, better-connected airport. By train: New Jalpaiguri (NJP) near Siliguri is the nearest major railhead (~4–5 hours by road). By road: shared jeeps and taxis run from Siliguri / NJP and Bagdogra.

Local taxis are the main way around town and to nearby monasteries and viewpoints; MG Marg is pedestrianised and walkable. Permitted destinations such as Tsomgo Lake are visited via registered operators.

Sikkimese, Nepali and Tibetan food dominate — momos, thukpa, gundruk and the local fermented drink chhang. MG Marg has a wide choice of restaurants and cafes.

Day 1: MG Marg, local monasteries (Enchey), and Ganesh/Hanuman Tok viewpoints. Day 2: Permitted day trip to Tsomgo (Changu) Lake and the Baba Mandir area. Day 3 (optional): Rumtek Monastery and the Ranka area, or a cable-car ride over the town.

Warm layers year-round and heavier winterwear October–December; a rain jacket for sudden showers; comfortable walking shoes; carry ID for permit checkpoints.

Border-area destinations such as Tsomgo Lake and Nathula require permits arranged in advance through registered local operators. Carry valid photo ID. Weather strongly affects mountain views.
