Dharamshala Travel Guide

Dharamshala, in the Kangra Valley below the Dhauladhar range, is the home of the Dalai Lama and centred on the suburb of McLeod Ganj ("Little Lhasa"). It blends Tibetan Buddhist culture with Himalayan scenery, monasteries and treks.

March to June for pleasant weather and September to December for clear post-monsoon days. Avoid the heavy July–September monsoon; winters are cold with occasional snow up top.

By air: Gaggal (Kangra) Airport (~13–15 km) is the nearest, with limited flights. By train: Pathankot (~85 km) is the nearest broad-gauge railhead; the narrow-gauge Kangra Valley Railway serves nearby Kangra. By road: well connected by state and Volvo buses from Delhi and Chandigarh.

The lower town and upper McLeod Ganj are several km apart — use taxis or local buses between them. McLeod Ganj itself is walkable; the Triund trek starts above it.

Tibetan cuisine is a highlight — momos, thukpa, tingmo — alongside Himachali and international cafe fare in McLeod Ganj.

Day 1: McLeod Ganj — Tsuglagkhang (Dalai Lama temple), Namgyal Monastery and the market. Day 2: Triund trek (long day hike or overnight camp). Day 3: Bhagsunag temple and falls, St. John in the Wilderness, and lower Dharamshala / HPCA Stadium.

Warm layers year-round; sturdy shoes for the Triund trek; a rain jacket in monsoon; heavier winterwear December–February.

Plan transport between lower Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj. Check weather before the Triund trek, and dress modestly when visiting the temple complex.
