Darjeeling Travel Guide

Darjeeling sits on a ridge above the tea valleys of West Bengal, famous for its tea estates, colonial charm, views of Kanchenjunga and the UNESCO Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (the toy train). Tiger Hill sunrise and the Batasia Loop are signature experiences.

February to March and September to December for the clearest mountain views. Avoid the June–September monsoon due to rain and landslide risk; winters are cold and can be misty.

By air: Bagdogra Airport near Siliguri (~65–70 km) is the nearest airport. By train: New Jalpaiguri (NJP) near Siliguri is the main broad-gauge railhead; the toy train also runs up to Darjeeling. By road: shared jeeps and taxis run from Siliguri / NJP up to Darjeeling.

Shared jeeps and taxis are the main way to get around and to reach viewpoints; central Darjeeling around the Mall and Chowrasta is walkable. Toy-train joy rides run between Darjeeling and Ghoom.

Darjeeling is synonymous with tea — sample estate teas widely. Tibetan and Nepali dishes such as momos and thukpa are local staples, alongside colonial-era bakeries.

Day 1: Chowrasta / the Mall, Happy Valley Tea Estate and a toy-train joy ride via the Batasia Loop. Day 2: Pre-dawn trip to Tiger Hill for sunrise over Kanchenjunga, then Ghoom Monastery. Day 3 (optional): The zoo and Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, or a nearby tea-estate visit.

Warm layers year-round (mornings are cold even in season); a windproof jacket for Tiger Hill sunrise; a rain jacket in monsoon; comfortable walking shoes.

Kanchenjunga views depend on clear weather, best early in the morning. Book Tiger Hill sunrise trips and toy-train rides ahead in peak season, and carry warm layers for the pre-dawn start.
