Rajaji National Park is one of the largest protected forest areas in northern India, stretching across the foothills that separate Rishikesh and Haridwar from the higher Himalayas. It's known especially for its elephant population — among the largest in the region — as well as tigers, leopards, deer, and over 300 recorded bird species, making it a worthwhile stop for wildlife and birding enthusiasts, not just pilgrims and yogis. Jeep safaris are the standard way to explore, run out of forest department gates including Chilla (the most popular for visitors based in Rishikesh) and Motichur. Early morning and late afternoon safaris offer the best chance of animal sightings, when the forest is cooler and wildlife more active. The park closes for a few months during monsoon each year for the breeding season, so it's worth checking open dates before planning a visit. Beyond the animals, the drive itself through sal forest and along the Ganga's edge is scenic enough to be worthwhile on its own.

How to reach Rajaji National Park

Taxis and pre-arranged safari operators run from Rishikesh to the Chilla gate; most guesthouses and travel desks in town can arrange a safari booking.
