Beatles Ashram (Chaurasi Kutia)

The abandoned ashram where The Beatles studied meditation in 1968, now covered in graffiti art and open for self-guided exploring.

Officially the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi Ashram, and better known simply as Chaurasi Kutia — "84 huts" — this forested compound inside the Rajaji Tiger Reserve is where John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr spent several weeks in early 1968 studying Transcendental Meditation. The stay produced much of what became The White Album, and the ashram's global fame has never really faded since. Abandoned for decades, the site has been reclaimed in an unusual way: local and visiting artists have covered the old meditation domes, lecture halls and residential huts in vivid graffiti — much of it Beatles-themed, some of it broader psychedelic and spiritual art. Walking through the overgrown compound today feels part historical pilgrimage, part open-air gallery, part quiet jungle ruin, with glimpses of the Ganga through the trees. Because it sits within Rajaji Tiger Reserve land, entry is ticketed and gate hours are enforced fairly strictly — arrive with enough daylight to explore and exit comfortably.

How to reach Beatles Ashram (Chaurasi Kutia)

Roughly a 10-15 minute walk from Ram Jhula via Swarg Ashram, or a short auto-rickshaw ride. Entrance is inside Rajaji National Park territory, clearly signed near the forest checkpoint.
