Kunjapuri Devi Temple

Kunjapuri sits at roughly 1,650 metres in the Tehri Garhwal hills, and is counted among the 52 Shakti Peethas — sites sacred to the goddess Sati across the Indian subcontinent. But for most visitors, the pull isn't the temple architecture itself so much as what surrounds it: a genuinely spectacular, uninterrupted sweep of snow-capped Himalayan peaks to the north, with the Doon Valley and the lights of Rishikesh spread out to the south. Sunrise is the whole point of the trip. Most visitors leave Rishikesh around 4:00 AM to reach the temple by first light, climb the final flight of steps to the courtyard, and watch the peaks turn gold as the sun comes up — a short trek or drive for a view that easily rivals destinations much further into the mountains. Some travellers combine the sunrise with a downhill trek back through forest villages toward Neer Garh Waterfall, turning it into a fuller half-day adventure. Exact sunrise time shifts meaningfully with the season, so it's worth checking before setting an alarm.

Taxi or rented scooter from Rishikesh via the Rishikesh-Tehri highway is the most reliable option for a sunrise start; shared jeeps run later in the morning but are too late for sunrise.
