About Bhartrihari Caves

The Bhartrihari caves sit just above the bank of the Shipra near the Gadkalika temple. According to tradition, Bhartrihari, said to be the step-brother of King Vikramaditya, lived and meditated here after giving up his kingdom. He is remembered as the poet of the Shringarashataka, Nitishataka and Vairagyashataka.

The caves are a shrine of the Nath tradition, and the nearby site of Pir Matsyendranath adds to the area's spiritual atmosphere. The passages are narrow and dim in places.
