Munnar Travel Guide

Munnar, in Kerala's Western Ghats, is famous for its emerald tea plantations, cool climate and rolling green hills. Tea estates, viewpoints, Eravikulam National Park and misty valleys make it one of South India's most scenic and peaceful hill retreats.

Roughly December to April for cool, pleasant weather. The June–August monsoon is lush and green but brings heavy rain and occasional landslides.

By air: Cochin International Airport (~110 km) is the nearest airport. By train: Aluva (~110 km) and Ernakulam are the nearest railheads. By road: buses and taxis run from Kochi (~130 km) and Madurai; road is the usual final approach, along winding hill routes.

A hired car or taxi is the most practical way to explore Munnar's spread-out sights; local buses connect the town and some estates. Roads are winding, so allow time between stops.

Kerala cuisine — including appam, puttu, and spice-rich curries — features strongly, alongside fresh cardamom, tea and homemade chocolates from the plantations.

Day 1: Tea gardens, the Tata Tea Museum and viewpoints around town. Day 2: Eravikulam National Park (Rajamalai), then Mattupetty Dam and Echo Point. Day 3 (optional): Top Station for valley views, or a plantation walk and spice-garden visit.

Warm layers for cool mornings and evenings; a good rain jacket, especially in monsoon; sturdy shoes for estate walks and park trails.

Eravikulam National Park closes for part of the year (calving season) and during the rare Neelakurinji bloom — check status before visiting. Avoid heavy-monsoon travel if wary of landslides.
