Chail Travel Guide

Chail is a tranquil, forested hill station near Shimla, built by the Maharaja of Patiala as his summer retreat. It is known for the Chail Palace, the world's highest cricket ground, and deep deodar forests.

March to June for pleasant summers and December to February for occasional snow. The monsoon is green and quiet.

By air: Chandigarh International Airport (~110 km) is the nearest major airport. By train: Kandaghat (~29 km) and Shimla on the Kalka–Shimla line are the nearest railheads. By road: buses and taxis from Shimla (~45 km), Kandaghat and Solan.

A hired taxi is the most practical way to explore Chail's spread-out, forested sights; the town centre is walkable.

Himachali and North Indian food is available around the town and at the palace hotel; options are simpler and fewer than in nearby Shimla.

Day 1: Chail Palace and grounds, the Gurudwara, and the Chail cricket ground. Day 2: Kali Ka Tibba viewpoint and a walk in the Chail Wildlife Sanctuary; Sadhupul on the way in or out.

Warm layers year-round; heavier winterwear December–February; a rain jacket in monsoon; sturdy shoes for forest walks.

Chail is quiet and spread out in forest — a vehicle helps. Some sights (like the cricket ground) sit within institutional grounds, so check access. It pairs well with Shimla and Kufri.
