Auli Travel Guide

Auli is a high-altitude ski destination and alpine meadow above Joshimath in Uttarakhand's Garhwal Himalayas. Famed for winter skiing, one of India's longest ropeways, and views of Nanda Devi, it is the country's premier snow-sports hill station.

December to March for snow and skiing; April to June for pleasant weather and clear peak views. The monsoon can affect the approach roads.

By air/train: the nearest airport (Dehradun) and railheads (Rishikesh/Haridwar, ~250+ km) are far; access is a long road journey to Joshimath. By road: bus or taxi to Joshimath, then road or the Joshimath–Auli cable-car ropeway.

Auli is reached from Joshimath by road or ropeway; on the slopes, walking and short treks cover the meadows and lake. Ski lifts operate in season.

Dining is mostly at resorts and Joshimath, serving Garhwali and North Indian food; options on the slopes themselves are limited, so plan meals.

Day 1: Auli ropeway, the ski slopes and the artificial lake. Day 2: Trek to Gurso Bugyal and Chattrakund for peak views. Day 3 (optional): Joshimath — Narsimha Temple, Shankaracharya Math and Kalpavriksha.

Heavy warm layers and proper snow gear in winter; sturdy shoes for treks; sun protection at altitude; a rain jacket around the monsoon shoulder.

Auli is reached via Joshimath — the approach from Rishikesh is long, so plan travel time. Skiing is seasonal with equipment and instructors available locally; check snow and road conditions.
