Best Time to Visit Auli

For snow and skiing: January to early March. Mid-January to February is the most reliable period; December can be cold without enough snow for skiing.

For views and walks: April to June and October to November. These months have pleasant days, open meadows and the clearest mountain views (especially October–November).

Avoid if you can: July and August. Heavy monsoon rain and landslides make the road journey slow and unpredictable.

Snow and skiing season 2026–27

Snow in Auli usually arrives in late December or January, and the most reliable snow cover is from mid-January to February. Skiing normally runs from January to early March, depending on how much snow falls; in a poor snow year the season can be short. GMVN announces its ski course dates each winter, so check with GMVN before booking a ski trip.

After heavy snowfall the road from Joshimath to Auli can close for a day or two until it is cleared, so keep a spare day in your plan.

Auli in December

Cold and usually clear, with days around 2–7°C and nights well below freezing. Snow is possible, mostly late in the month, but it is not guaranteed and is often not deep enough for skiing. Christmas and New Year are busy, so book stays early.

Auli in January

Peak winter. January usually brings the first big snowfalls, and skiing and beginner courses start once there is enough snow. Expect days around 2–7°C, nights around −4 to −8°C or colder, and occasional road closures after heavy snow.

Auli in February

Usually the most reliable month for deep snow and skiing, with slightly longer days. Ski championships and winter carnivals are often held in February in good snow years. Weekends are busy.

Auli in October and November

Dry and clear – the best months for views of Nanda Devi and the other peaks. Days are about 10–16°C, and nights drop to near freezing by November. There is no snow for skiing yet.
