Two days — the essentials
Day 1 — Old Delhi and Mughal heritage
- Morning: Red Fort (closed Mondays)
- Late morning: Jama Masjid, then climb the minaret for the view
- Lunch: Old Delhi street food — Paranthe Wali Gali or the kebab shops around Matia Mahal
- Afternoon: cycle-rickshaw through Chandni Chowk, Khari Baoli spice market
- Late afternoon: Raj Ghat
- Evening: Gurudwara Bangla Sahib, then dinner in Connaught Place
Day 2 — New Delhi and South Delhi
- Morning: Humayun's Tomb
- Late morning: Qutub Minar complex
- Lunch: Hauz Khas or Saket
- Afternoon: Lotus Temple, then the National Museum
- Evening: India Gate and Kartavya Path at dusk
Four days
Days 1 and 2 as above.
Day 3 — Agra day trip
- Early train (Gatimaan or Shatabdi, around 100 minutes) or car
- Taj Mahal (closed Fridays), Agra Fort, and Itmad-ud-Daulah if time allows
- Return to Delhi in the evening
Day 4 — Depth and shopping
- Morning: Akshardham (closed Mondays; no electronics permitted)
- Late morning: Lodhi Gardens and Safdarjung Tomb
- Afternoon: shopping — Dilli Haat, state emporia on Baba Kharak Singh Marg, or Sarojini Nagar
- Evening: Nizamuddin Dargah for qawwali if it's a Thursday, otherwise Lodhi Art District and dinner in Khan Market
