Chennai's nightlife is quieter than Mumbai's or Bengaluru's, shaped by Tamil Nadu's relatively conservative licensing rules. Most bars and clubs close by 11pm to midnight, and the scene concentrates in hotel lounges rather than standalone clubs.
The liveliest options sit inside five-star properties in Nungambakkam, Alwarpet and along the ECR — rooftop bars, live-music lounges and a handful of pubs with resident DJs. Independent microbreweries and gastropubs have grown steadily in Anna Nagar and along OMR, serving the IT crowd.
For a non-drinking evening out, Chennai is at its best. Besant Nagar's Elliot's Beach fills with families and street-food carts well past 10pm, Marina Beach stays busy till late, and the December music season turns the city into a run of evening concerts across dozens of venues.
Note: Tamil Nadu's legal drinking age is 21, and retail liquor is sold only through state-run TASMAC outlets. Dry days apply on national holidays and election days.
