Kodaikanal Travel Guide

Kodaikanal, the "Princess of Hill Stations", sits in the Palani hills of Tamil Nadu's Western Ghats. Known for its star-shaped lake, Coaker's Walk, Pillar Rocks, pine forests and cool climate, it is one of South India's most beloved family hill retreats.

Cool year-round; April to June and September to October are popular. No snowfall, though winter nights are cold; the monsoon brings mist and rain.

By air: Madurai Airport (~120 km) is the nearest; Coimbatore is an alternative. By train: Kodai Road (~80 km) is the nearest railhead; Palani is closer for some routes. By road: buses and taxis up the ghat from Madurai, Palani and Dindigul.

The town centre and lakeside are walkable and cycle-friendly; local taxis reach outlying viewpoints like Pillar Rocks and Berijam Lake.

Kodaikanal is famous for homemade chocolates, eucalyptus oil and local produce; South Indian meals and cafes are widely available around the lake.

Day 1: Kodaikanal Lake (boating/cycling), Bryant Park and Coaker's Walk at sunset. Day 2: Pillar Rocks and Guna Caves, Bear Shola Falls and pine forest. Day 3 (optional): Berijam Lake (with a forest permit) and further viewpoints.

Warm layers for cool days and cold nights; a rain jacket in the monsoon; comfortable walking shoes; no snow gear needed.

The winding ghat road up has many hairpin bends — allow time. Berijam Lake needs a forest permit; the lakeside and Coaker's Walk are busiest in peak season, so start early.
