Located in Deoghar in the Santhal Parganas division of Jharkhand, Baidyanath Dham (also known as Baba Dham) is one of the most revered pilgrimage destinations in Eastern India. The main temple features a 72-foot-tall pyramidal stone spire adorned with three gold kalashes, donated historically by Raja Puran Singh of Giddhaur. Crowning the spire is the rare Punchsula—a unique five-knife brass trident—and an eight-petaled lotus jewel known as Chandrakanta Mani.

The main shrine houses the central Kamna Linga (the Shiva Linga of Desires) and is surrounded by a sprawling complex of 21 smaller shrines dedicated to various Hindu deities. The architecture blends traditional Nagara design elements with local historical craftsmanship, standing as a testament to centuries of uninterrupted devotion.

Mythological Legend & Origin

According to ancient scriptures, the demon king Ravana performed severe penance in the Himalayas to appease Lord Shiva. Pleased by his sacrifice, Shiva granted him the Kamna Linga on the strict condition that if placed on the ground anywhere during his journey, it would root there permanently.

Fearing the power Ravana would gain by bringing Shiva to Lanka, Lord Vishnu engineered a plan with Varuna (god of water). While passing through Deoghar, Ravana felt an urgent need to relieve himself and handed the lingam to a shepherd named Baiju Bhil (Lord Vishnu in disguise). Baiju placed the lingam on the ground, permanently fixing it to the earth. Unable to lift it, a frustrated Ravana pressed his thumb into the lingam (leaving a visible mark still worshipped today) before departing.

Baidyanath Dham is situated in Deoghar city within the Santhal Parganas division of Jharkhand, India. It lies on the Chota Nagpur Plateau, nestled near the Mayurakshi and Ajay river systems, at an average elevation of approximately 255 meters above sea level. The surrounding terrain features granite hillocks such as Trikut Pahar, Nandan Pahar, and Tapovan.

Rare Dual Sanctum (Shiva & Shakti Union): Baidyanath Dham is one of the rare sacred sites in India functioning simultaneously as a Shiva Jyotirlinga and a Shakti Peetha (where Goddess Sati’s heart is believed to have fallen).

The Divine Gathbandhan Ritual: Experience a sacred visual spectacle where red silk ribbons (Gathbandhan) are tied directly between the 72-foot spire of the central Shiva temple and the adjacent Parvati temple, symbolizing marital harmony, longevity, and divine energy.

The Divine Physician ("Kamna Linga"): According to the Shiva Purana, Lord Shiva acted as a Vaidya (physician) to heal Ravana's wounds after his intense penance, earning the deity the name Baidyanath. Devotees visit to seek physical health, mental peace, and the fulfillment of deep desires (Kamna).
