Banaras station at Manduadih handles a growing number of services, and Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction (formerly Mughalsarai) is a major junction about 15 km away where many long-distance trains stop.

A good guide genuinely improves a first visit, because the layers of religious and historical meaning are not self-evident. Hire through your accommodation or an established operator rather than accepting someone who approaches you at a ghat, as street guides often steer you toward commission shopping.

Bodh Gaya is about 5 hours away by road, so plan at least an overnight rather than a day trip. Varanasi and Sarnath combine naturally with Bodh Gaya, Rajgir, Nalanda and Kushinagar as part of the Buddhist pilgrimage circuit.

Varanasi's Holi has a reputation for being rougher than in many places, with heavy bhang consumption. Foreign visitors, particularly women, should consider celebrating at their guesthouse rather than on the streets. Many accommodations organise safer in-house celebrations.

Consult a travel clinic before departure. Hepatitis A and typhoid are commonly recommended for India. Stomach upsets are relatively common in Varanasi, so be strict about water and food, and carry oral rehydration salts and basic stomach remedies.
