Commissioned by Emperor Shah Jahan in 1638, the Red Fort (Lal Qila) was the main residence of Mughal emperors for nearly two centuries. Its red sandstone walls, gardens and pavilions blend Persian, Timurid and Indian architectural styles, and it hosts the Prime Minister's Independence Day address each year.
