Shaniwar Wada

The fortified 18th-century seat of the Peshwas, now a ruined but atmospheric monument.

← Back to Pune

Shaniwar Wada was built starting in 1730 by Peshwa Baji Rao I as the political centre of the Maratha Confederacy, remaining the Peshwas' seat until the British takeover in 1818. A fire in 1827/1828 destroyed most of the original structure, leaving fortified walls, gates and foundations — still atmospheric, especially during the evening sound-and-light show.

How to reach Shaniwar Wada

About 3 km from Pune Junction railway station; autos and cabs run throughout the city.
