Budget Travel Guide: Pilgrimage Towns on a Shoestring

4 August 2026

How to keep a temple-town trip genuinely affordable without ending up somewhere unsafe or an hour from where you need to be.

Pilgrimage towns are among the cheapest places to travel in India, largely because they've accommodated ordinary devotees for centuries rather than tourists. But there's a real gap between cheap-and-fine and cheap-and-regrettable.

Where the money actually goes

On a short temple trip, accommodation is usually the largest single cost, followed by transport to reach the town. Food is rarely the problem - local thali places and temple prasad keep daily eating costs very low.

Getting accommodation right

Three things matter more than the headline rate. Distance from the temple: a room saving you a few hundred rupees but sitting several kilometres away costs you that back in autos and time. Timing: rates in temple towns swing enormously with the festival calendar, so travelling just outside peak season is the single biggest saving available. And confirmation: book ahead rather than arriving and negotiating, particularly during festivals when walk-in rates rise sharply.

Every guest house listed on Apna Basera shows its rate upfront with no booking fees added, and you can filter by price - see what's available in Deoghar or browse all destinations.

Small things that add up

Travel with hand luggage only if you can - many temples require you to leave bags outside. Carry a refillable water bottle. And carry cash: many small vendors and autos in temple towns still don't accept cards or UPI reliably.
