🌞 Best time to visit Sultanganj
Sultanganj is busiest during Shravan (July-August), when lakhs of Kanwariyas pass through to collect holy water before their walk to Deoghar - an intensely devotional, crowded atmosphere. For a quieter visit focused on the temple and riverside itself, October to March offers pleasant weather and a much calmer experience. Avoid the peak summer months (April-June) if you're not visiting specifically for the pilgrimage season.
✈ How to reach Sultanganj
By train: Sultanganj has its own railway station (also called Ajgaibinath Dham station), about 1.5 km from the temple, with direct trains connecting to Bhagalpur, Patna, Howrah, Deoghar, and Ranchi.
By road: Sultanganj is about 24 km from Bhagalpur Junction, well connected by road - taxis and buses run regularly from Bhagalpur.
By air: The nearest airport is Bhagalpur; for longer journeys, Patna or Deoghar airports offer wider flight connections, with a road or rail journey onward to Sultanganj.
🚗 Getting around locally
Sultanganj itself is a small, walkable town - the temple, railway station, and main ghats are all within easy reach on foot or by a short e-rickshaw ride. Boats are also available near Murli Hills for a river view of the temple.
📅 Suggested itinerary
Day 1: Arrive in Sultanganj, check in, and visit Ajgaibinath Temple for evening darshan (temple hours: 9 AM-12:30 PM and 5 PM-8 PM). Walk along the ghats to see the Ganges flowing northward - a rare and sacred sight.
Day 2: Early morning darshan, collect holy water if beginning the Kanwar Yatra, then either start the walking pilgrimage to Deoghar or explore Murli Hills before heading onward by road or rail.
🌑 What to pack
Comfortable walking shoes if you're continuing on the Kanwar Yatra route, a container for collecting holy water (widely available locally too if you don't bring your own), light cotton clothing, a reusable water bottle, and any personal medication - facilities can be limited during peak Shravan crowds.
🍴 Local food to try
Simple vegetarian thalis and pilgrim-friendly meals are widely available near the temple and railway station, suited to travellers passing through. As in much of Bihar, litti chokha is a local staple worth trying if you have time before continuing your journey.
