What is Shravani Mela?

Shravani Mela is one of India's largest annual religious gatherings, held every year during the Hindu month of Shravan (roughly July-August, exact dates shift annually with the lunar calendar). Millions of devotees, known as Kanwariyas, undertake the Kanwar Yatra - carrying holy water from the Ganges to offer at Baba Baidyanath Temple in Deoghar, one of the twelve sacred Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva.

Shravani Mela 2026 dates: July 30 to August 28, 2026. The most crowded days are typically the Mondays of Shravan (Shravan Somvar) and the final days of the mela, so plan accordingly if you prefer smaller crowds.

The Kanwar Yatra route

The traditional Kanwar Yatra route runs approximately 105 km from Sultanganj (where devotees collect holy water from the Ganges at Ajgaibinath Temple) to Baba Baidyanath Dham in Deoghar. Most pilgrims complete this on foot over 3 to 5 days, though the pace varies widely depending on age, group size, and tradition. The route is well-marked and supported with volunteer camps, medical stations, and food stalls along the way, especially during peak mela days.

What to expect

1. Extremely large crowds, especially on weekends and Shravan Mondays
2. Long queues for temple darshan - arriving very early morning or late at night generally means shorter waits
3. Heavy traffic and limited parking near the temple itself during peak days
4. A festive, intensely devotional atmosphere with chanting of "Bol Bam" heard throughout the town

Tips for pilgrims

1. Book your accommodation well in advance - Deoghar's guest houses fill up quickly during this period
2. Carry minimal luggage if you're walking the Kanwar route
3. Wear comfortable, broken-in footwear
4. Stay hydrated and carry electrolytes given the walking distances and monsoon heat
5. Keep a printed or photographed copy of any ID you may need
6. If travelling with elderly family members or young children, consider visiting outside the absolute peak days (the final week tends to be the most crowded)

Where to stay

Guest houses within walking distance of the temple are in high demand during Shravani Mela - book early. Many pilgrims also choose to stay slightly outside the immediate temple area for a quieter base, then travel in for darshan. Check each listing's distance from the temple before booking during this period specifically.
